Lino, a naturally different floor

The word “lino” is often used to describe all kinds of resilient flooring. Yet genuine linoleum is a very specific product: a floor covering made mainly from raw materials of natural and renewable origin.

Made from linseed oil, wood flour, resins and mineral fillers among other things, and applied to a jute backing, linoleum is robust and durable. It has long been used in schools, hospitals and public buildings, but its current colours and designs also make it an attractive floor covering for the home.

With Marmoleum, Forbo offers a particularly extensive range of linoleum floor coverings, with numerous solutions for residential and professional projects alike.

Marmoleum comes in sheets, tiles and planks, in a wide variety of colours, textures and patterns. Depending on the collection, different installation methods are possible, including glued and click installation.

Your questions about linoleum

Linoleum is made mainly from raw materials of natural origin, notably linseed oil, wood flour, resins and mineral fillers, applied to a jute backing. It is this particular composition that sets it apart from PVC or vinyl floor coverings, among others.
Yes, depending on the type of linoleum and its condition, renovation may be possible. Before replacing an old lino floor, we can check whether it can be deep-cleaned, repaired or renovated to extend its service life.
No. Even though the word “lino” is often used to refer to all resilient flooring, genuine linoleum and vinyl are two different products. Linoleum is made mainly from raw materials of natural origin, whereas vinyl is a PVC-based floor covering.
No. Its robustness explains why it is so widely used in schools, hospitals and other high-traffic buildings. But with the colours, patterns and formats available today, linoleum is also perfectly at home in private interiors.
Yes. Marbled remains a great classic, but current collections also offer almost plain surfaces, concrete effects, linear structures reminiscent of wood, as well as tiles and planks for creating more graphic compositions.
Yes. There are linoleums specially designed to improve impact noise reduction, particularly for schools, offices, homes and other spaces where acoustic comfort is important.
