Every year, as the festive season approaches, many of you put up an Advent calendar at home – but did you know there is another, generous and caring way to count down the days to Christmas Eve?
Let us introduce you to the reverse Advent calendar, which we have been doing since 2018 (more on that at the end of the article).

What is the reverse Advent calendar?
The reverse Advent calendar is about giving rather than receiving. In practical terms, instead of opening a window each day to get a small gift, the idea is to give an item or a non-perishable food product, or make a donation to a charitable cause, every day during Advent.
Once you have placed all your donations in a box or carton, all you have to do is hand over what you have collected to a charity, a local association or a family in need. It is a way of sharing the Christmas spirit with those who need it most.
The benefits of the reverse Advent calendar:
1. It emphasises generosity.
This tradition reminds us of the importance of giving and generosity during the festive season. It helps us move away from the bad habits associated with excessive consumption and focus instead on kindness towards others.
2. It strengthens community ties:
The reverse Advent calendar can also bring members of a community together, whether it is a family, a group of friends, a workplace or a school. It creates a sense of unity.
3. It has a positive impact, both for the giver and for the recipient:
Every little gesture counts. By making modest donations every day, you can make a real difference to the lives of people in need.
How to create your own reverse Advent calendar:
1. Choose your container:
You can use a basket, a box or any other container you have to hand

2. Select your donations:
Think about what you can give each day. It could be non-perishable food, warm clothing, toys, hygiene products, etc.
3. Choose your cause:
Choose a charity, a family or a specific group to which you will donate the items collected.
4. Start your calendar:
Start on 1 December and add a new item or donation to the container every day.
5. Make the delivery:
On Christmas Day (or in the days that follow), give your collection to the charity or person you have chosen.
In conclusion, the reverse Advent calendar brings a new and meaningful dimension to the festive season. By putting generosity and sharing first, we can rediscover the true spirit of Christmas and make a positive difference to the lives of those in need.
So why not try creating your own reverse Advent calendar this year and spread some joy around you?
